NELA High School Winter Sports Get Underway

2019 January Sports

Here’s an update on league play at high schools in Northeast Los Angeles – Eagle Rock, Franklin in Highland Park, Lincoln in Lincoln Heights, Sotomayor in Glassell Park and Wilson in El Sereno. Data is as of winter break in mid-December.

The teams at Eagle Rock High and Franklin High have no home court advantage this year, because the main gym at each school is undergoing seismic retrofitting. Eagle Rock is playing some games at the Yosemite Recreation Center and Franklin will play its “home” games in its opponents’ gyms.

Eagle Rock, Lincoln, and Wilson are 2-0 in competition in the Northern League. Franklin, Sotomayor and Marshall (in Los Feliz) are 0-2. Shown in the photo above are Eagle Rock’s Christian Naranjo and Franklin’s Ed Acevedo in a game on Dec. 10 at Yosemite Rec Center that was won by Eagle Rock, 69-42.

In Northern League competition, Eagle Rock is 2-0, Wilson 1-0, Lincoln and Marshall are 1-1, Sotomayor 0-1, and Franklin 0-2. In the photo above,  Ashley Williams shoots over Franklin defender in a game on Dec. 14 that was won by Eagle Rock, 65-10.

All eyes this season are on the boys soccer team at Sotomayor. The team was the runner-up in last year’s Division 1 Championship, qualified for the State playoffs and won two State matches, but lost in the Championship round. They have won the last four Northern League Championships and are the favorite to win league again this year. They are 34-0-6 in the last four years.

Each team in the Northern League has completed two matches. Franklin and Sotomayor are 2-0, Marshall 1-0-1, Eagle Rock 0-1-1, Lincoln and Wilson 0-2.

After two Northern League matches for each team, Eagle Rock and Sotomayor are 2-0 followed by Marshall and Wilson at 1-1. Franklin and Lincoln are winless at 0-2.

Eagle Rock High is the only school in Northeast Los Angeles with a girls water polo team. The team plays in the Eastern League, which also includes Contreras (in downtown L.A.), Legacy (in South Gate), Marquez (in Huntington Park) and Roosevelt (in Boyle Heights). League competition starts on Jan. 10. In pre-season play, the Eagles were 0-2.

Wrestling teams are made up of boys and girls, with boys competing against boys and girls against girls in their respective weight classes. Individual accomplishments are combined into one team score.
Eagle Rock (2-0) and Wilson (0-1) are competing in the Northern League against Belmont (in Westlake), Roybal (in Westlake), and Torres (in East L.A.). The Northern League in wrestling also includes Franklin and Bernstein High (in Hollywood), but those schools are not competing this year because Franklin did not have a coach and Bernstein did not field a team.
