Welcome to Summer, 2018. It’s cliché to say that time flies, but it’s a cliché because it’s true!
I don’t know about you, but I can’t hear “Pomp and Circumstance” without tears coming to my eyes. Everyone in NELA has cause to be proud of the Class of 2018, from Franklin High and Eagle Rock High and various charter schools, the majority of whom are going to college in the fall and at least 15 who are going into the military, according to a tally compiled by the Boulevard Sentinel and reported on the front page.
In this month’s issue, we also report on achievements in art (with new and restored murals appearing in Highland Park) and music, with Violet Rivers of Eagle Rock winning a statewide music composition contest and special recognition on the national level. (Hint: Save this issue of the Boulevard Sentinel. It could be worth something someday as Violet’s musical career unfolds!)
This month, Jeffery Marino, our real estate columnist also wrote a compelling “Get to Know” column on Max Arias, a labor leader who lives in El Sereno. Mr. Arias came up on our radar screen in May, when his name was reported as the chief negotiator in cliffhanger contract talks between service workers in public schools and the LA Unified School District. Jeffery got in touch with him, and sure enough, he is one interesting guy.
And our newest contributor, Wendy Newell, took beautiful photographs for our regular “Picks” column, which features places to “relax and recharge” this month. Just looking at the page, so beautifully laid out, was relaxing to the eyes.
See our coverage this week on business openings, closings and milestones. Hal’s Pet Shop, which has been in business in Eagle Rock for nearly 100 years, is closing – but for good reasons. Shelley and RJ Blough, the third generation of the family to run the business, are going into well deserved retirement, with plenty of fun to look forward to.
Speaking of fun, here’s wishing you loads of it. Enjoy the issue and enjoy the summer.
