The Math and Science team at Luther Burbank Middle School in Highland Park, coached by Ben Feinberg, the school’s 8th grade math teacher, aced several brain twisters at the recent Middle School Science Bowl at Cal State L.A, including, for example: What is the name for the apparent force that causes hurricanes to be deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere?* The team members pictured here, from left, are Emily Garcia , Meikha Navalta, coach Ben Feinberg, Sarah Hermida, Naydeline Ruano and David Martinez. Other team members were Sebastian Narvaez, Genesis Santos, Sebastian Ariumura, Josue Mendez and Mauricio Rivas. In the end, Luther Burbank did not advance to the National Science Bowl finals in Washington, D.C. to be held in April. That honor went to Chaparral Middle School from Diamond Bar. *Answer: The Coriolis effect.
