Penny Oven | 2131 Colorado Blvd. | Eagle Rock

At Penny Oven, a wood-fired bakery and café, the menu is made up of dishes that chef Michelle Wilton, a graduate of the California Culinary Academy, makes at home. On my first visit I tried the Croque (toast with mushrooms, spinach, caramelized leeks, bechamel and gruyere) – and I recommend it highly! Other offerings include sandwiches, salads, breakfast plates, pastries, coffees, iced drinks and a kids menu. You can also pick up a loaf of freshly baked bread and specialty food items.
Penny Oven, which opened in June, is the third Eagle Rock eatery owned by Michelle and her husband, Corey Wilton; they also own Four Café and Pie-n-Cone. Prices at Penny Oven are mid-range. Service is friendly. Penny Oven is open daily, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Menu: pennyoven.com
Groove GPS | 912 Cypress Ave. | Cypress Park
If you have a tracking need, Isaac Garcia has a solution. Garcia is the owner of Groove GPS, a new store in Cypress Park that offers devices and software to monitor the whereabouts of objects and people in real time. Typical customers include owners of delivery trucks, parents with teen drivers and pet owners.
Garcia, an information systems engineer, has a first-hand grasp of what customers need: When his parents retired to Mexico, he worried about them until they installed a device in their car and software on their phones that let him know where they are. “It really is all about peace of mind,” he says.
Cypress Park is more than a business location for Garcia. He was born and raised there and lives there with his wife and children. Groove GPS is open Monday through Friday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. / 323-230-3448 / groovegps.com
