Architectural gem in Eagle Rock sells for $3 million+

2023 Business Editions Featured January Real Estate

Designed and built by Eagle Rock architect, Oakley L. Norton, this stunning four-bed, three-bath estate sold for $3.125 million in November.

The price tag apparently surprised even the sellers, who listed the home for $1.995 million on Oct. 13. But the bids quickly escalated and the home was under contract in 10 days — with a $1.1 million markup.

Built in 1982, the home is one of four in Eagle Rock designed by Norton, according to the book, The Oakley L. Norton Homes of Eagle Rock. It features a hexagonal theme throughout, crafted from concrete blocks and finished with rough sawn redwood. It first sold in April 1991 for $435,000 — a hefty price back then. Now it joins just a handful of homes that have sold for more than $3 million in NELA.

  1. When we moved to the Rock in 2000, the idea that any house in the ‘hood would sell for even $1 million seemed far off!

    Congratulations to the seller.

  2. Thanks for the story on the sale of my dad’s last Eagle Rock home. Dad loved Eagle Rock, was a second generation Oxy grad, met my mom at Oxy, and chose to raise his family here. I grew up living in homes that dad designed and hand built, he could do everything, from digging the foundations to the finish carpentry. He was actually not a licensed architect, he was a progressive math teacher by trade and designed and built our homes during summer vacations, a skill he learned from his dad. We all helped when we were old enough, he taught us everything by example. He built our homes for us, inspired by things he saw and loved while traveling with us around the world. Dad passed away last year, his legacy is his family, the thousands of students he taught at Area H Alternative school (which he helped create), Eagle Rock High Magnet, Luther Burbank Jr High, and King Jr High, and the beautiful homes he created for us and others to enjoy.
